Nearmap has excellent satellite photography of the area. (Choose the Personal Use option) It also has a pretty nifty feature that allows you to view past satellite imagery.
Accommodation:
The locations to look out for are Casuarina, Salt, Kingscliff and Coolangatta / Tweed Heads (in order of distance from the restaurant).
Coolangatta / Tweed Heads being right next to the airport, is the biggest town in the vicinity and should have a fair number of hotels to stay at.
There is a very good caravan park/camping site in the town of Kingscliff – though the recent erosion has affected it fairly badly. Also in Kingscliff is the Breakfree hotel.
There are two major hotels within walking distance at Salt Village: Mantra and Peppers.
You can find rooms in both of these hotels on Stayz.com.au – as well as many other nearby accommodation options.
A (very) short drive away is Casuarina Beach and the Santai Resort.
A bit further down the road is Cabarita beach, which also has some accommodation options.
There are also holiday homes/apartments in the area listed on the local real estate agents’ websites: LJ Hookerhere or here (select Holiday Rentals from the drop-down box on the “rent” page); Kingscliff Sales and Rentals here or here; and lastly, Kingscliff Professionals.
Transport:
Car Rentals: the usual suspects: Hertz, Budget and a local company called Freedom Car Rentals.
Bus routes for the intrepid – the best route from Gold Coast Airport to Salt Village is …
Gold Coast Cab Fare Estimator – no idea how accurate this thing is, but it’s there if anyone wants to try it.
Things to do:
Visit the most easterly point of Australia, near the Byron Bay lighthouse
Historic Pub Crawl (pdf)
Located at Salt Village is the Good Food Guide recommended Fins Restaurant
